What Does Alternative Tourism Mean?

In general, alternative tourism is an alternative to the mass standard tourism as philosophy and attitude. The main accent in these travels is the preserved natural environment, authentic atmosphere and cuisine, and local traditions.

The alternative forms of tourism combine tourist products or separate tourist services, different from the mass tourism by means of supply, organization and the human resource involved. These are rural, ecotourism, adventure(biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering, rafting, diving, caving, climbing), thematic tourism – connected with the cultural and historical heritage, the esoteric, religion, wine, traditional cuisine, ethnography and traditional music and handicrafts. Bulgaria is a country with exceptional diversity of resources for alternative tourism. Its relatively small territory combines uniquely preserved nature with remarkable cultural and historical heritage, mild continental climate, interesting landscapes and hospitable people tolerant to differences and respecting traditions.

Bulgarian biodiversity is very significant for Europe. Unique nature areas are protected and conserved in a system of protected areas covering almost 5% of the country’s territory. Three national parks have been created: Pirin, Rila, and Central Balkan. The Central Balkan National Park gained certification by the European network Pan Park in 2003, another proof of quality of Bulgaria’s preserved nature.

Bulgaria’s magnificent forests, pure water, and rural areas are tucked far away in a place where one can experience a return to traditional human values and peaceful lifestyle. Those who like high-speed and extreme experiences can make unforgettable memories in the mountains of Bulgaria.

In today’s world of high technology and fast paced lifestyle, we all need “to recharge our batteries,” and I believe, we can do it if we go back to nature. This is the reason we all should consider as a high priority and responsibility to everyone to save and protect our nature. We shall never forget that we did not simply receive this Earth from our parents. We just borrowed it from our children.
