EU Citizenship for Bulgaria

Recently, Bulgarian parliament voted series of measures to facilitate the framework and mechanism of the investment legislation for residency. As a result, it was introduced to the public Bulgarian Investor Program for Residency and Citizenship, or BG IIP.

The program is based on the Canadian Investor Immigrant model, with the unique difference that the investors through BG IIP are not obligated to live in the country during the permanent residency period, as it is with the other similar programs. The end purpose of BG IIP is to obtain Bulgarian, respectively EU citizenship, after 5-years permanent residency period.

There are no nationalities or religion restrictions to apply for BG IIP. There are no requirements pertaining to work and management experience, education, or age limit to apply for BG IIP.

It takes between 4 to 6 months the investor to receive his/her Bulgarian permanent residency permit, much faster comparing with some other programs.

The investment through BG IIP is made into Bulgarian Governmental Bonds and is fully guaranteed and secured by the Bulgarian Government. You can choose between two options:

Full Investment Option – you will deposit the full investment of
BGN 1,000,000 (€ 511,292) for 5 years without interest, at the end of the 5th year the amount is refunded to the investor.

Financed Investment Option – you will deposit a reduced amount of
€ 160,000. This amount is used to finance a 1,000,000 BGN (€ 511,292) closed five-year term loan from a chartered Bulgarian bank. The amount of
€ 160,000 is not refunded to the investor at the end of the 5th year.

On base of this investment, Bulgarian state grants you with permanent residential status for 5 years. After the 5th year, you can apply for Bulgarian, by extend EU citizenship, which gives you numerous advantages such as visa free traveling, low cost of doing business, quality education, accessible health care, and quality life style.

Further, in March 2011, Bulgaria is scheduled to sign the Schengen Borders Code agreement, which will allow permanent residency holders and citizens unrestricted travel, work, and study rights within the Schengen zone. Once Bulgaria joins Schengen, the country will apply to become part of the visa waiver program of many countries worldwide, including USA and Canada.
