Winery of Damianitza
I would like to bring to your attention one winery with traditions in production of premium wines – the winery of Damianitza. Located near by Sandanski town, winery of Damianitza is one of the oldest vineyards in Bulgaria with bottling capacity over 2 million bottles per year. Their wines appeal to customers who share an appreciation for unique flavor and authentic taste. The winery of Damianitza excels in small-batch, handcrafted wines.

Among the best known wines produced in the winery of Daminitza are Melnik 1964 Red, Melnik 1964 White, Redark, No Man's Land, Uniqato Rubin, Chateau Belitza, Melnik 13, and the most famous one Melnik, called as well Churchill's Wine. There is a very interesting story about this wine.
Melnik – The Churchill’s Wine
The people in the village Harsovo (near by Sandanski town) often tell the story of Sir Winston Churchill who used to buy two barrels of Melnik wine every year from the local cellars. Even during the Second World War, he never stopped drinking his favorite wine. This wine is produced from the local variety Shiroka Melnishka Loza from the region of Melnik, grown in vineyards neighboring the tobacco fields and meadows in Pirin Mountain.
Churchill’s wine is exclusively made for the connoisseur of the typical Bulgarian wines. The wine has a brilliant garnet color and a pleasant aroma of cherries, herbs and tobacco. The oak, spicy, and vanilla overtones in the finish make the wine harmonious and balanced to the palate.
Another interesting story is said about No Man's Land wine produced in winery of Damianitza. No Man's Land was born on a virgin territory, on the 5 miles strip of land between Bulgaria’s primary border and the main frontier with its southern neighbors. The wine is made from vines which have grown in this “No Man’s Land.” This narrow strip of land, which previously separated the worlds of Socialism and Capitalism, is an environmental paradise, pollution free area with preserved wildlife where the vines bask in the sun. These vines produce succulent and rich fruit resulting in wines of extraordinary character.

In June, 2007 I visited the winery of Damainitza myself to obtain some more first hand information for you. There I met Mrs. Tzvetelina Shutova – Wine Tour Coordinator; she was so kind to show me the winery and to teach me the basic of the wine tasting. See the photo below:
